The city of Kandy is located in the center of Sri Lanka at an altitude of 485 meters above sea level and about 116 kilometers from Colombo. Generally regarded as the capital of the hills, Kandy was the last capital of the last generation of Sri Lankan monarchs, which came under British rule in 1815. The name Kandy was given by the English as a derivation of "mountain country". The current name of Sri Lanka is "Kandy" and the historical name of this city is Senkadagalapura. It is also the site of the Temple of the Tooth Relic (the sacred tooth of the Buddha), which is a famous pilgrimage site.
